Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby studied architecture together at the Royal College of Art in London and BarberOsgerby was established in 1996. They first designed the Loop Table, produced by Isokon, in 1997 from their studio in Trellick Tower, West London.
In 2004, they were awarded the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize for Furniture. This led to a commission to design furniture for the De La Warr Pavilion, Britain’s most important modernist building. In 2005, the Zero-In table was launched by the British producers Established & Sons. The table employs car industry techniques in its construction, never before used in the furniture industry.
BarberOsgerby has since been developing collections for a range of leading manufacturers and clients. Their work is found in many permanent collections including the V&A Museum in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Design Museum in London.
Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby have been named Designers of the Year at the annual ELLE Decoration British Design Awards. They then went to take the award for Best Seating Design with the modular sofa system, Panoramic, launched this year in Milan by Established and Sons.
The awards were presented to BarberOsgerby by fashion icon Roland Mouret and Michelle Ogundehin, editor of ELLE Decoration who said of the designers “ELLE Decoration felt that BarberOsgerby produced an outstanding body of work this year, all of which embodied their now trademark attention to detail and commitment to quality, great designs. This made them truly worthy winners of ELLE Decoration’s most prestigious award: 2007 Designer of the Year.”
The awards ceremony was held at the Wallace Collection Gallery on Manchester Square, marking the sixth anniversary of the ELLE Decoration Awards.
